I’m Carolee Lord, a Licensed Hairstylist, Hair Restoration Specialist, and the Founder & CEO of The Mane Ms. Hair Coach. With over 18 years of professional experience — and a lifetime of lived experience as a woman with coily, kinky, afro-textured hair — I know firsthand what it’s like to feel overlooked and underserved by mainstream salons.

My journey began with frustration and rejection, but it transformed into a mission: to create a space where coily, kinky, afro-textured hair is cherished. Along the way, I became an expert in hair restoration, gentle and intentional styling, and afro-textured hair care — not just to heal my hair, but to help others reclaim their confidence.

Today, I bring that expertise to you through online coaching, making it possible for anyone, anywhere, to manage coily, kinky and afro-textured hair, restore its health, and fall in love with their crown again. Because your hair isn’t a problem to be disregarded— it’s a crown to be cherished.
The Spark: My Personal Hair Journey
​Growing up, I struggled to love my hair. I remember my elementary school photo day. I saw my teacher gently brushing a classmate’s straight hair into place. I wanted the same treatment, so I removed my neatly done cornrows—only to be ignored. The photo was taken, and so was a piece of my confidence.
​
​As a teen, I endured painful salon visits to relax my hair, often leaving with burns and scabs. Eventually, I managed my natural hair, switching between braided extensions and twist-outs. But even then, finding professional hair care was a struggle, as was my hair and scalp.
​One day, I walked into a luxury salon for a silk press, cut, and colour. The receptionist said, “We don’t do your hair type here.” Holding back tears, I went to another salon, where I waited before a stylist reluctantly agreed to do the colour, only to direct me elsewhere for the cut and style, saying it would "save me money." That moment changed everything.​

The Journey to Expertise​
My passion for hair, particularly afro textures, transformed into a mission after that experience: to foster acceptance and embrace of these textures.
I became a licensed hairstylist, only to discover that even in the diverse city of Toronto, formal training barely covered coily, kinky and afro textures. The ten-month diploma program, which only dedicated two weeks to “multiethnic” hair, focused on braiding straight-haired mannequins.

​At every salon I worked in—except one specializing in hair loss—training for afro textures was nonexistent. The message was clear: our hair wasn’t a priority or afterthought. But I refused to accept that. I specialized in Hair Restoration, learning to nurture hair and scalp health at every stage, and built expertise through hands-on experience with numerous clients with various hair textures.​

The Birth of The Mane Ms. Hair Coach​
Even while I helped others overcome their hair challenges through restoration, I quietly battled my own. I felt the external pressure to wear hairpieces to promote the product, while internally struggling with the embarrassment of a receding hairline, see-through strands, and a visible scalp. Behind the stylist’s chair, I was fighting insecurity.
​
Step by step, I began reclaiming my confidence. I transitioned from full hairpiece coverage to scarves that covered my hairline, to twists styled forward like bangs, and eventually to the locks I proudly wear today. What started as a personal struggle became a journey of transformation—where my training, professional expertise, and lived experience came together.
Today, I not only guide others in caring for their hair and scalp, but I also embody the freedom and empowerment that comes with embracing your authentic crown.

I’ve worked hands-on with parents navigating difficult hair moments. In one case, a young girl came in with severely tangled and matted coily hair. Two stylists worked carefully with conditioners and detangling techniques, but she was uncomfortable and overwhelmed. It became clear that preserving length was no longer the priority — her comfort and hair health were.

After a thoughtful conversation with her mother, we transitioned her into a shorter, manageable style and suggested fun clips to help her embrace the change. A few days later, they returned smiling — her hair healthier, her confidence restored, her new style proudly accessorized. That experience affirmed what I teach:
